THE BRAHMA KUMARIS ENVIRONMENT INITIATIVE
Creating a Climate for Change …
At the core of the Brahma Kumaris’ work is the understanding of the connection between our consciousness, our thoughts and actions, and their impact on the world. It has been seen that long-lasting change in any social or environmental system starts with a profound shift in the minds and hearts of people. The current environmental crisis is therefore a clear call to transform our awareness and lifestyle.

“Changes in consciousness mean we will make changes in lifestyle and diet, and that will start reversing the impact of climate change.”

Sustainable Lifestyle: Adopting a less materialistic lifestyle and increasing the use of clean energy saves the planet’s resources and brings greater well-being.
Plant Based Diet: Food that is plant based, and cooked with love, nourishes our whole being and brings inner clarity. It contributes to the health and future of the planet by reducing our carbon footprint.
Meditation: Spending time in silent reflection or meditation helps us to connect with our deeper values and find the strength to live by them, enabling us to be more mindful of the impact of our choices.
Peaceful Living: Promoting and living by the principles of universal peace can lead to less violent conflicts and wars, thus enabling vast resources to be redirected to creating a healthy and sustainable society.
“The world outside of us is a reflection of our inner world, so that would mean that we as individuals are out of balance on the inside. Meditation and spirituality will help restore this balance.”

The Brahma Kumaris' Environmental Commitment
A wider view …
The Brahma Kumaris Environmental Policy aims to encourage all of us throughout the Brahma Kumaris’ organisation to feel that we are guardians of the Earth’s resources. We can help each other to grow in terms of our awareness of the natural world as a living system that needs our care, and deepen our concern for cultures living in environmentally susceptible lands. By becoming more mindful of these issues and more compassionate in our attitudes, we can make environmental choices that can be felt in all spheres of our lives – in our homes and personal lives as well as in Brahma Kumaris’ activities and buildings. We will use all resources in a more mindful and sustainable way.
Environment Special Interest Group (ESIG) in Australia
The Brahma Kumaris’ ESIG began in Australia around 2007. The purpose of the ESIG is to:
- promote the aims of the Brahma Kumaris Environment Initiative
- support those who work in the environment and sustainability areas as well as those who simply have an interest in caring for nature
- encourage appreciation of our natural world and cultivate feelings and actions that reflect respect and care for nature
- enhance the lifestyle of students of The Brahma Kumaris in Australia by bringing about more environmental awareness, and look for ways to make our Retreat Centres, Centres and Course Locations “greener”, such as measures to save electricity and water or use less materials, recycling and composting etc.
We offer a variety of retreats and programs, including an annual retreat for professionals, gardening working bees, meditations and programs for UN delegated days for the environment such as World Environment Day and Mother Earth Day, workshops on making environmentally safe cleaning products, composting and how to create a vegetable garden, etc.
