The Brahma Kumaris offer sanctuaries of peace and calm during and after natural and manmade disasters so that people can begin to centre and ground themselves and gently return to a state of calm through guided meditations.

When people are affected by natural and/or manmade disasters, the body may go into a fight, flight or freeze mode.  The ability to process thought may be lost and making even the simplest decisions can be difficult.  Consequently, people may lose connection with their own inner wisdom at a time when they need it most.

A Sanctuary Experience Program

 

The Sanctuary Experience Project came about at our national service meeting in April 2013.  After a number of trials, the Sanctuary Experience program has been refined so a standard and very simple program can now be set up anywhere.

Following trauma-informed guidelines, safe, peaceful and calming 'sanctuaries' are held to support people in restoring a sense of balance which can assist them in moving from a state of emotional stress to a space of relative inner stillness, even some time after the traumatic event.

Programs are presently held in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania and many of our Sanctuary facilitators have been trained as Emotional and Spiritual Support Personnel in the Victorian Council of Churches, Tasmanian Council of Churches and NSW Disaster Chaplaincy Response Network Emergencies Ministry programs.

4 Steps to Calm

  1. Breathe in calm ... breathe out any tension ... and again ... relax the body ... feet ... shoulders ... neck ... mind ...
  2. Awaken a memory of your deepest peace and calm ... gently remember ... allowing calm feelings to flow into you and through you ...
  3. Connect to the feeling of deep calm ... absorbing ... filling ... gently returning to your inner-most calm place ...
  4. Feeling empowered ... at your calm centre ... let calm flow out and into your life.
